Legacy Success in 2026: Heart-Led, Data-Smart, Reality-Checked
If 2025 taught us anything, it’s that legacy programs thrive when they’re built for real-world volatility and real human feelings. In 2026, inflation is projected to ease across most major economies, but not evenly. Budgets will remain cautious and donor confidence mixed. Meanwhile, headlines warn that heavy AI-infrastructure investment could re-ignite price pressures, so “higher for longer” may yet pay us another visit.
And yet, the long game looks bright. The wealth transfer continues to gather steam, with trillions shifting across generations … Do we really need to continue saying this is historic / unprecedented?! In the nearer term, overall giving has proven resilient, even as gifts in wills totals bob year-to-year (a normal feature of estate-driven revenue).
So what does success in legacies look like this year?
1) Lead with heart, not the tax code. Donors decide with values, with heart first. Make your legacy proposition emotional and human. Let technical details support, not lead the ask.
2) Build trust in public, gratitude in private. In a polarized climate, clarity and care are your edge. Show how legacies are used and say thank you authentically, transparently, and repeatedly.
3) Think journeys, not jolts. Map stages from curious ? intending ? pledging and design touchpoints for each (events, FAQs, gentle check-ins, etc.). Don’t wait for pledgers to self-materialize; nurture them. Keep a light, always-on sprinkle of “legacy dust” across your communications so the idea feels normal, not niche.
4) Widen your reach. Avoid deciding for donors who “can” or “can’t” leave a gift in a will. Create ways for donors to self-identify and steer the pace.
5) Include childless/childfree households – properly. Use inclusive language (“loved ones“), avoid assumptions, and reflect their motivations and life stages in your creative and events.
6) Be data-smart, not data-blind. Segment, test, and forecast. In a word, don’t let dashboards replace conversations. Balance numbers with nuance.
To get you going, here is a quick, 90-day action sprint:
- Reset your promise: Update your legacy page and lead stories to emphasize outcomes and identity (“the world they’ll shape“), then tuck tools and tax behind a click.
- Map (or fix) the journey: Draft a one-page journey with 3 to 5 stage-specific touchpoints; schedule them in the communications calendar. If your CRM allows it, create reminders so you track everything. Alternatively, tools like Asana or Monday can also work (ask me how I created a legacy engagement pipeline set up in Asana for a client!).
- Normalize the ask: Add a gentle legacy PS to newsletters, email signatures, and thank you letters for steady “legacy dust.”
- Invite voices: Run a virtual “Legacy Open House” featuring current pledgers; capture video clips for reuse.
- Listen at scale: Launch a short values survey (“What impact do you want to be remembered for?“) to surface warm leads.
Let’s land this plane!
In the new year, you will want to pair reality-checked planning (inflation, volatility) with human-centered practice (heart, trust, journeys). This is a great opportunity to recommit to building stronger and deeper donor relationships that are focused on trust and hope for a better future.
